On Friday, September 27, Bridget Dixson, President & CEO of the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce, attended the second annual New Mexico Organized Retail Crime Association (NMORCA) conference. This event brought together leaders from the retail industry, law enforcement, and policymakers to address the growing issue of organized retail crime (ORC) in New Mexico. During the conference, Santa Fe Police Chief Paul Joye was recognized for his leadership and dedication to public safety. Additionally, the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce is actively working to enhance community safety through the development of a Community Safety Resource page, a valuable tool designed to provide resources and information to local businesses and residents to help improve security. As part of the Chamber's ongoing efforts to engage with the community, join us for our monthly NMORCA meeting on Thursday, October 24, from 9:30–10:30 AM to further discussions around organized retail crime and its impact on the business community. What is NMORCA?
NMORCA was established to combat the rise in organized retail crime, which involves the theft and resale of goods through coordinated criminal efforts. These crimes can lead to significant losses for businesses, increased security risks, and higher costs for consumers. By uniting retailers and law enforcement, NMORCA helps create partnerships that improve response strategies and foster collaboration across industries. The association also focuses on educating retailers and businesses about how to protect their operations from ORC, promoting the sharing of best practices and providing training to help retailers recognize, prevent, and respond to incidents of organized crime. Key Takeaways from the 2024 Conference The second annual NMORCA conference was designed to offer insights, resources, and networking opportunities for all attendees. The event highlighted the importance of collaboration between the business community and law enforcement to effectively combat ORC. Attendees participated in discussions about emerging trends in retail crime, strategies to prevent theft, and ways to improve communication between retailers and law enforcement. One of the key focuses of the event was the implementation of new technologies and practices to detect, track, and respond to organized retail crime more efficiently. As ORC tactics become more sophisticated, it is vital for businesses to stay informed and equipped with the latest tools to protect their assets and customers. NMORCA’s Ongoing Mission NMORCA continues to play a vital role in addressing the challenges posed by organized retail crime in New Mexico. Through its initiatives, the association provides a platform for the exchange of knowledge, resources, and practical solutions to mitigate the impact of retail crime on businesses and communities. By working together, retailers and law enforcement can better protect businesses from the financial and operational harm caused by organized retail theft. NMORCA's ongoing mission is to strengthen these partnerships, educate businesses, and advocate for policies that help curb the growing threat of ORC.
